GPX vs. TCX vs. FIT, and what survives the conversion

Every GPS watch and bike computer, from an entry-level Garmin to a Wahoo head unit, a Coros multisport watch or an Apple Watch, records the same basic thing: a list of coordinates with a timestamp. Where they differ is the container that data gets saved in. GPX is the closest thing the fitness world has to a universal standard, a plain-text XML format that any mapping tool, from Strava to a hiking app to the poster editor on this site, can read without complaint. TCX, Garmin's older Training Center format, was built for structured training: it groups points into laps and expects a defined sport and lap-by-lap totals. FIT is different again, a compact binary format rather than readable text, which is exactly why it's what most modern devices record natively; a FIT file can pack a full ride's worth of position, elevation, heart rate, cadence and power data into a fraction of the size a GPX file would need for the same activity.

None of that matters day-to-day until one app wants GPX and your watch only exports FIT, or a training platform insists on TCX before it will accept structured workout data. What happens to sensor data during conversion

Position, elevation, and timestamps carry across every conversion pairing without exception, since all three formats are built around exactly that. Heart rate, cadence and power depend on whether the source file actually recorded them (a plain GPX track from a phone app usually won't have any) and on whether the target format has somewhere to put them: GPX and TCX both carry this data as extension fields, and FIT has dedicated record fields for all three. So a FIT file recorded with a heart rate strap and power meter converts to GPX or TCX with that data intact, and converting a GPX file that already has heart rate extensions back to FIT restores it into FIT's native fields rather than dropping it. The one thing that doesn't survive is structure that a format simply has no concept of: TCX's lap boundaries collapse into one continuous track in GPX and FIT, since neither format has a lap construct of its own.

What is the difference between GPX, TCX and FIT files?

GPX is a simple, universal format for a route: coordinates, elevation and timestamps, readable by almost any mapping tool. Does converting TCX to GPX lose heart rate data?

No. Heart rate, cadence and power are carried across the conversion as GPX extension fields, which Strava, Garmin Connect and most other platforms read on import. What GPX can't hold is TCX's lap structure, so multi-lap workouts become a single continuous track.
