A watch recording once a second on a five-hour ride logs eighteen thousand points for a route that could be described accurately with a few hundred. Most of those points sit on what is, geometrically, a straight line, they don't change the shape of the route at all, they just add weight to the file. This tool runs the Douglas-Peucker algorithm, the same curve-simplification method the map poster editor already applies to every upload, letting you choose exactly how aggressively to thin the points with a live before-and-after preview, instead of guessing.
It only ever removes whole points, never data within the points that survive, so elevation, heart rate, cadence and power on the points you keep stay exactly as recorded. At light or medium settings the visual difference is nowhere close to visible on a poster or a map; pushed all the way to maximum you'll start to see corners soften slightly, which is fine when file size matters more than exact precision.
