Trimming a GPS file, the same way you'd trim a video

A video editor doesn't ask you to type in timestamps, you drag the in and out points on a scrubber and watch the clip update live. There's no reason a GPS track should be any different, so that's exactly how this tool works: your route is drawn on a real map, and the two sliders below it control where the activity starts and ends. Drag either one and the portion being cut fades out on the map immediately, while the part you're keeping stays fully visible, so there's never any guessing about what the downloaded file will actually contain.

Because trimming only touches the common route data shared by every GPS format, it doesn't matter whether you're cutting a GPX export from a phone app, a TCX file from an older Garmin Connect account, or a FIT file straight off a watch, and the format you download in doesn't have to match the one you uploaded. A FIT file in, a trimmed GPX out, works exactly the same as any other combination.

FAQ

Common questions

Why would I trim the start or end of a GPS activity?

Any number of reasons: you forgot to stop recording after you got home, the warm-up before a race isn't part of the effort you want to show, or the first and last minute just point at your own front door and you'd rather not share that. This tool cuts that off, the same way you'd trim the dead air off the start and end of a video clip.

How does the map preview work?

Your route is drawn on a real map. As you drag the two sliders, the parts being trimmed off the start and end fade out while the part you're keeping stays fully visible, so you always see exactly what will and won't be in the final file before you download it.

Will trimming affect my total distance or elevation stats?

Yes, slightly. Removing points from the ends removes the distance and elevation change they covered. For most activities that's a small amount, not a meaningful change to the overall numbers.

Does it work on GPX, TCX and FIT files?

Yes. Upload any of the three, trim it, and download the result in whichever of the three formats you need, they don't have to match.

Is my route data uploaded anywhere?

No. Trimming happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript, including the map preview. Your file never leaves your device.

I need to hide a specific location on my route, not just the start and end. Is there a tool for that?

Yes, that's a different tool: GPS Privacy Crop lets you click anywhere on the map to redact a zone around that location, wherever it falls in the route, not just at the ends.

Turn that route into a poster

Once it's cropped the way you want, the same file works directly in the map poster editor.
