Good to know
Distance and elevation gain don't live in a GPX, TCX or FIT file as a single stored number the way you might expect, they're derived by walking through every recorded point and adding up the distance and height change between each consecutive pair. That's exactly what this tool does, live, the moment you drop a file in: distance from the raw coordinates, elevation gain and loss from the raw altitude readings, pace and average speed from distance divided by the time between the first and last timestamp, and simple averages for whichever of heart rate, cadence and power the file happens to contain.
It's a handy second opinion before a file goes anywhere else, checking a FIT export actually has GPS data before uploading it somewhere, confirming a merged or cropped file still adds up the way you expect, or just satisfying curiosity about a route someone shared with you without needing an account anywhere.
FAQ
Distance, duration, elevation gain and loss, average speed and pace, and averages for heart rate, cadence and power when the file has them, plus the raw GPS point count.
Very close, but not always identical to the decimal. Distance and elevation gain are recalculated straight from the raw GPS points here, while your watch or Strava may apply their own smoothing or barometric elevation correction, which can shift the total by a small percentage.
Yes, upload any of the three and the same set of stats is computed the same way.
No. Every number is computed in your browser with JavaScript. The file never leaves your device.
Once you know the numbers, the same file works directly in the map poster editor.
