A plain elevation line tells you where a route goes up and down, but not how hard any of it actually was. Coloring each stretch by how steep it is at that point turns the same chart into something you can read in a couple of seconds: a wash of green means it was mostly flat and rolling, a band of orange or red flags the part that actually hurt. Elevation is lightly smoothed first so ordinary GPS wobble doesn't show up as noise across an otherwise clean line.
The chart is just a picture, not a file export: it doesn't change your GPS data or produce a corrected GPX, that's what the other tools here are for. Download it as a PNG once it looks right, to drop into a ride report, a race recap or just to keep alongside the activity itself.
FAQ
Each stretch is colored by how steep it is at that point: blue for a descent, green for flat to gently rolling, then yellow, orange and red as the gradient gets steeper, the same rough scale cycling elevation profiles usually use.
No. This tool only draws a picture from your file, it doesn't change anything or produce a corrected GPX, TCX or FIT file. The one thing you can download is the chart itself, as a PNG image.
Run it through the Elevation Fix tool first, which replaces missing or noisy GPS/barometric elevation with accurate ground elevation looked up for your exact coordinates, then bring the corrected file back here.
No. Reading the file and drawing the chart both happen entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, and no account is involved.
Yes. Upload any of the three; elevation data is all it needs to draw the chart.
Yes, it downloads as a plain PNG image, so it drops straight into a document, blog post or social share like any other picture.
