Getting into the Tokyo Marathon takes years. When someone finally lines up in Shinjuku, crosses the Imperial Palace loop, and finishes past millions of spectators, they’ve earned something worth keeping. A custom route poster with their finish time and name is the one gift that puts all of that on the wall.
“I applied to Tokyo four years in a row before I got in. When I finally crossed that finish line I knew I needed something more than a photo. The poster shows the exact route I ran, Asakusa and all. It was the first thing I ordered when I got home. Had to have it.”

The race
The Tokyo Marathon is an Abbott World Marathon Major run each March. Millions apply in the lottery each year, a fraction get in. The course starts at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku, loops the Imperial Palace, passes Asakusa at km 18 and finishes at Tokyo Station. Japanese race organization operates at a different level: immaculate volunteer stations, no litter, precise timing, and millions of spectators lining every street.
Tokyo is an Abbott World Marathon Major. Millions enter the ballot each year. The acceptance rate is in the single digits. Getting in is half the achievement, finishing is the other half.
The course runs from the Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku to Tokyo Station with almost no elevation. Fast times, elite field every year, and the kind of organization that makes other races look improvised.
The course passes through Asakusa, one of Tokyo’s oldest districts, at around km 18. Senso-ji temple visible in the distance, centuries-old architecture against the city skyline, millions of spectators in every gap.
Roughly 38,000 runners, over 140 nationalities, and crowds that fill every available stretch of pavement. Taiko drums, volunteers in matching uniforms, supporters who have been there for hours before the first runner arrives.
In late February and March, plum blossoms line sections of the course. In warmer years, the earliest cherry blossoms are already out. Running Tokyo in spring bloom is a detail that no other Major can offer.
