It depends on how well you know their running life. If you know about one specific race, a marathon they trained a year for, their first half, that's usually the stronger gift as a single route poster since it marks a date they'll remember. If you mostly just know they run a lot and post their activities online, a heatmap pulls in everything public they've logged and turns that volume into the poster instead, no single race required.
A minimal single-color route is the safer pick if you're not totally sure of their taste in decor, since it tends to blend in with whatever else is already on their wall.
