The city
Nijmegen calls itself the oldest city in the Netherlands, and it holds up: the Romans had a settlement here, Ulpia Noviomagus, roughly two thousand years ago. You can still see it in Valkhof Park, where the remains of a Carolingian chapel sit next to what is left of the Roman castellum. The city sits on the river Waal, right where the terrain starts to rise into the hills near Groesbeek, which is unusual for a country that is otherwise this flat.
The rest of the year, Nijmegen is mostly a university town built around Radboud University, with a compact, busy old center around the Grote Markt. But in the third week of July, the character of the city changes completely. The Vierdaagsefeesten fill forty stages across downtown, tens of thousands of walkers sleep in tents and spare rooms across the whole region, and the city spends four days focused on one thing: people coming in on the Wedren, tired, but in.
The route
Every day starts and finishes at the Wedren, but the route itself heads a different way each time. Walkers who signed up for 30, 40, or 50 kilometers keep that same distance for all four days, in a bigger or smaller loop around Nijmegen.
Over the Waalbrug into the Betuwe, toward Elst, with the Waal on one side and the Rhine not far off on the other. This is the day most walkers still feel fresh, and the crowds along the road show up in full for the first time.
West into the Land van Maas en Waal, past the green polders around Wijchen. This day also falls on Pink Wednesday, a day celebrating visibility and acceptance of the LGBTI+ community, in the city and along the route.
The toughest day for most walkers: the Zevenheuvelenweg and the forests around Groesbeek and Mook, with real elevation change in a country that doesn't have much of it. Whoever is going to feel it, feels it here.
South via Malden, Mook, and Middelaar to Cuijk, then back to Nijmegen for the walk into Sint Annastraat: the Via Gladiola. Hundreds of thousands of spectators, gladiolus flowers instead of confetti, and the Vierdaagsekruis waiting at the end.
2026 edition
After two heatwaves earlier that summer, there was concern beforehand about temperatures. In the end it worked out fine: a cooling northern wind kept things from feeling oppressively hot on the route.
Of the more than 45,000 who started on Tuesday, 42,137 walkers reached the Via Gladiola on Friday. Not a record, that still belongs to the 2025 edition with 42,777 finishers, but still one of the best-attended editions ever.
Wheelchair participant Ronald van Dort was the first to cross the finish this year, at 09:02 on the Via Gladiola. Early finishers usually get the smallest crowd, but the quietest walk in.
The second walking day fell on Pink Wednesday this year. Extra color and extra crowds on the route to Wijchen, on top of what is already there every year.

Most Vierdaagse walkers already have a drawer full of crosses after a few editions, so another cross or another medal doesn't add much. What does work: a poster of their own route, with their name and the number of times they have walked it as the title. That's not a generic walking gift, it shows exactly what they did. If someone has walked it for years, a print of their very first edition or their most memorable one is often more personal than the most recent.
Both work, it depends on what you want to highlight. All four days together shows the scale of the whole thing, four loops around Nijmegen that form a kind of flower shape together. Just the Friday, with the walk into Sint Annastraat, is more compact and tells the specific story of the finish. If you're unsure, the full route is the safer choice, it immediately says what the poster is about.
Sure. The official routes for all four days are already loaded in the editor, so you can make a poster right away even without your own tracking data. If you do have a Strava account or a GPX export of your own walk, use that instead of the default route, and the poster shows exactly your pace and your breaks.
The broad shape of each day has stayed the same for years, Elst on Tuesday, Wijchen on Wednesday, Groesbeek on Thursday, and Cuijk on Friday, but the organizers tweak small sections from edition to edition, for example to avoid roadworks or crowding. The editor has the most recent route loaded. If you walked an earlier edition with a slightly different route, send us your GPX file and we'll get it added.
